of £28.6 million was spent on mobile internet marketing in the UK in 2008 - an increase of 99.2 per cent on the previous year, new research shows.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: verdana;"&gt;According to figures from the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PricewaterhouseCoopers, mobile ad spending grew at a faster rate than predicted.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: verdana;"&gt;The authors of the study said the targeting ability of mobile advertising, as well as its immediacy and strong returns on investment, has prompted more companies to invest in it.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: verdana;"&gt;Paid-for search marketing represented the largest proportion of mobile advertising last year at 50.2 per cent.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: verdana;"&gt;This was followed by mobile display advertising - including banners and text links - which accounted for 49.8 per cent of spending on the medium.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: verdana;"&gt;Guy Phillipson, chief executive of the IAB, said that over the last year, there has been something of a buzz surrounding mobile internet marketing.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: verdana;"&gt;"Now is the perfect time for The problem is that many of the fancy surveys on website spending usually include big dollar franchise spending in their data; the result is not too helpful for individual hotels. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="blackarticle"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="blackarticle"&gt;On average, a well-done limited-service hotel website contains 30 to 45 individually searchable landing pages and will generally run from $100 to $175 per page. Full service, metro area, and resort hotels usually demand more pages to be effective in search and sales. Make sure that some sort of continuing marketing program, continuing keyword  research &amp;amp; placement, a link strategy, and an online  market competition study is included. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="blackarticle"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="blackarticle"&gt;Remember that just about any techie can design an attractive website; it's the knowledge of hotel sales &amp;amp; marketing that really counts to develop a productive website. A &lt;span lxslt="http://xml.apache.org/xslt" class="tickerlinx"&gt;&lt;b&gt;Google&lt;orgid idsrc="nasdaq" value="GOOG"&gt;&lt;/orgid&gt; &lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;     (nasdaq:       &lt;a href="http://finapps.forbes.com/finapps/jsp/finance/compinfo/CIAtAGlance.jsp?tkr=GOOG"&gt;GOOG&lt;/a&gt; -  &lt;a href="http://search.forbes.com/search/CompanyNewsSearch?ticker=GOOG"&gt;        news     &lt;/a&gt; -     &lt;a href="http://people.forbes.com/search?ticker=GOOG"&gt;        people     &lt;/a&gt;) search on "conficker" revealed more than 3.2 million mentions of the virus. One, in &lt;em&gt;eWeek&lt;/em&gt;, compared the program's notoriety to Paris Hilton's.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;On Wednesday, the latest mutation of Conficker is set to begin communicating with a new set of domain names, potentially making the worm harder to control. The April Fool's Day shift in the worm's functions could also reveal its purpose, triggering it to steal financial information, tamper with infected machines, send spam or target Web servers with crippling floods of requests for information. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;But even as Conficker has become one of the most widespread strains of malware of all time--currently infecting as many as 3 million PCs, according to security firm F-Secure--the software has done little but spread, with no clear financial motive. Instead, the buzzy virus may be serving another money-making purpose: inadvertent free marketing for the cybersecurity industry.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;In the past five days, Google searches for the words "computer virus" have doubled, and searches for "computer worm" nearly quadrupled, according to Google Trends. Both search terms have reached their highest popularity in more than three years. In 2003 and 2004, years when viruses like Blaster and Sasser were featured on prime-time news shows, cybersecurity jumped to the top of CIOs' priority list. As coverage of major viruses has fallen in recent years, security slipped to the No. 7 spot in the survey's results, even as the number of infected PCs worldwide has exploded, along with the number of corporate data breaches. Within a year, the videos received 6.2 million hits and company profits increased by 500 percent.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Online contests can also give a product or destination great exposure, Miller said.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Scottsdale, Arizona Convention and Visitors  Bureau conducted a "Pity Me, Scottsdale" contest, in which entrants were encouraged to describe why they deserve to be pitied and awarded a vacation package to the sunny locale. The contest drew more than 1400 still photos and 400 videos from contestants.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"The cost to the Scottsdale Visitors Bureau? Virtually nothing," Miller said. " They sent out press releases online and got businesses to put packages together.  You don't have to create something. Let your customers create it."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Miller offered another example of an online contest. Bag Borrow or Steal, an outlet for designer handbags, held a competition for the "ultimate bag-aholic." While the decline was far from a threat to the firm's survival -- more than half the cases the firm takes come through attorney referrals -- Cooper says he felt it was important enough to make some changes to the business model. In January, The Veen Firm added direct online advertising to its marketing budget, launching its first &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pay_per_click" target="new"&gt;pay-per-click&lt;/a&gt; campaign.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;"It was a philosophical jump for us," Cooper said. "We thought of ourselves as one of the more prominent firms in the city, not a 1-800 ambulance firm. ... But we need to make sure that our names are out there."&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;So far, he says, the results appear promising. Although the overall number of calls has not rebounded, the number of quality calls is up. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;"We've seen changes just in the past month," Cooper said. "The calls we are getting are to a certain extent pre-selected, because [people] are responding to ads that talk about catastrophic injuries."&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;At the same time, the cost has been higher than he expected. Bids on Google for phrases like "trucking accident" go up to $17 per click these days, he said, while "San Francisco personal injury attorney" goes for $21. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The 15-lawyer firm's push into direct online advertising underscores the still increasing role of the Internet as plaintiffs firms compete for new clients. But business models vary, and some firms make pay-per-click ads a regular part of their mix while others still prefer more traditional methods. Some plaintiffs lawyers interviewed for this story say that they help boost targeted traffic to their Web sites, but many caution against excessive exuberance.
